The values it expressed lasted just as long: loyalty to working people, affection for East Tennessee, acceptance of others, and commitment to children and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>She used humor to lower defenses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton has said that she expected people to laugh at her. The narrator recognizes Jolene\u2019s beauty and confesses how much she stands to lose. Her vulnerability gives the song its force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c9 to 5\u201d turns workplace sexism and economic exploitation into a story millions of people can sing together. The simplicity made the complexity shareable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Her stories traveled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Parton\u2019s music moved through mountain bluegrass, country-pop, gospel, disco, rock, film, and musical theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d offers the clearest example.
