How does a simple Google search for\u00a0say, effective marketing\u00a0strategies,\u00a0lead to\u00a0three hours of\u00a0learning about\u00a0the mating habits of a Pygmy Hippo?<\/p>\n

The Link Hole.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The what<\/em> hole? The Link Hole. It’s\u00a0what we’re calling\u00a0that distracted\u00a0path of web surfing that so many of us get lost on\u00a0while “just looking up something quick.” It\u00a0happens to even the best and most focused of us.<\/p>\n

You know, you’re trying to find local showtimes for a movie and\u00a0wind up spending an hour on Tom Skerritt’s IMDB page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Oh I didn’t know he did an episode of Will and Grace!”<\/p><\/div>\n

Or you’re looking for the DMV and somehow wind up\u00a0on\u00a0TMZ.<\/p>\n

Or you meant to go to whitehouse.gov but instead went to whitehouse.com and, well….<\/p>\n

Now we don’t have any particularly savvy advice regarding how to avoid falling down the Link Hole (or where\u00a0to meet Russian brides)—you’re on your own there. But we do know that\u00a0the\u00a0Hole can be a\u00a0friend as well as a foe.<\/p>\n

If people are going to dawdle, dabble, and dilly daddle (and do\u00a0we really need so many\u00a0D words for this concept?) online, shouldn’t you take advantage of it? Indeed you should.<\/p>\n

Let’s say you run a modest\u00a0online shoe store.\u00a0You might think your blog (if you have one, and you should<\/span>) would focus strictly on new shoes, promotions,\u00a0or maybe, if you’re feeling frisky, a top five list of the sexiest sandals for spring (whoa!).<\/p>\n

But why not broaden your blog’s horizons? How about an article on\u00a0how a pair of\u00a0heels fared\u00a0at a baseball game?\u00a0“How My Jimmy Choos Handled a Day at\u00a0Wrigley Field” might\u00a0sound like an\u00a0offbeat post, but by incorporating other subjects into your article (and headline) you’ll be widening your searchability and potential reader base—and customer base.\"wrigley<\/p>\n

Is this technique a shoe<\/em>-in for viral success? Heck no. But now your article\u00a0might show up in a Google search for\u00a0“Cubs,” “Wrigley Field,” and “Baseball,” as well as\u00a0in\u00a0all of the other shoe-related searches. Sounds good, right? Heck yes.<\/p>\n

It’s all a testament to having quality, engaging content on your site, no matter what line of business you’re in. Diversify that content a little bit and\u00a0widen your Link Hole status.<\/p>\n
