Since its inception in 2006,\u00a0Twitter has emerged to become\u00a0a force on the Internet. A force, that is, for 140 characters\u00a0worth of\u00a0banal nonsense.<\/p>\n

OK, so it hasn’t been all<\/em> meaningless meandering posts about people’s\u00a0mundane lives. There’s also been meaningless meandering\u00a0posts about celebrities’\u00a0lives.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, Twitter is popular, but — brace yourself — it’s also a fad<\/em>. “What? It’s been around for six years? How can it be a fad?” you exclaim way too loudly at your humble author. Well, if you\u00a0recall that\u00a0from 2005 until early 2008 Myspace was the most visited social networking site in the world,<\/strong> and is now basically a place for\u00a0Justin Timberlake to hang out with 11 of his friends,<\/a>\u00a0you can see how social media vehicles have a tendency to break down.<\/p>\n

But let’s go even further back for an analogy. Remember CB radio? Remember those things?! If you’re under 40 you might not, but rest assured, CB radio was a full blown craze in the 70s. The ham radio scene was full of hip handles (Betty Ford was “First Mama”) and genre-specific jargon (10-4 good buddy!) that seemed to ooze out of every “Dukes of Hazzard” episode. It all\u00a0seems kinda silly now, doesn’t it? #irony<\/p>\n

Surely there are numerous benefits to being\u00a0on Twitter. Building brand awareness,\u00a0interacting with your\u00a0customers and\u00a0partners, and\u00a0having another marketing outlet\u00a0are all great reasons to\u00a0tweet. But as this CBS MoneyWatch piece<\/a> points out, just being on Twitter with a sleepy account\u00a0might be worse than not being there at all. An unresponsive Twitter account, especially when pertaining to customer inquiries, creates\u00a0a public relations minefield. There are some lesser known pitfalls<\/a> too, including potential legal issues. Plus as Twitter’s popularity has risen, so has its noise. With a medium all about brevity and abbreviations, it can be especially tough to find anything of value. Cutting through the sea of hashtags and ampersands and #FollowFridays can be daunting, especially for the casual user.<\/p>\n

Yes, we are taking some liberties with how long a fad can last, and yes we recognize\u00a0that Twitter has been involved in some significant\u00a0causes,<\/a> but as evidenced by the Myspace exodus and\u00a0CB radio fizzle out,\u00a0the\u00a0way we communicate\u00a0can change in less time than it takes to\u00a0say “Digg.” If you use Twitter wisely and\u00a0don’t bank on it as a\u00a0long-term marketing strategy,\u00a0you’ll be “trending” ahead of all those people who\u00a0bought\u00a0stock in the pet rock.<\/p>\n
